Many studies have shown a link between stress and illness. Stress seems to have become a constant factor in today’s fast-paced society which can weaken the immune system and accelerate the aging process.

A positive attitude, connecting to other human beings, and minimizing stress all have a lot to do with immune system health, as well.

Influenza, or flu, is an unpleasant affair with fever, cough, as well as head and body ache.
When this illness is further complicated by a
bacterialpneumonia, a harmful super-infection develops. Until now, researchers thought
that the flu facilitates an infection with pneumonia bacteria because it leads
to a decrease of immune cells in the blood and thus impairs the body's
defenses.
A joint venture from researchers from the Helmholtz-Centre for Infection
Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, the Otto-von-Guericke-University in Magdeburg,
and the Karolinska institute in Sweden have taken an in-depth look at the
connection between flu infection and pneumonia. Their results have disproven a
common theory about flu-like pneumonia.

Some viral infections trigger a decrease of immune cells in the blood – a
so-called "lymphopenia". The reasons behind it and whether this is
the case with influenza are unknown. To investigate the latter, HZI researchers
infected mice with flu viruses and measured the amount of immune cells in the
animal's blood every day. Some days later, flu-infected mice received a dosage
of pneumonia bacteria usually harmless for healthy mice. While the flu-infected
mice did develop a superinfection & subsequently died, surprisingly, they
were not suffering from lymphopenia. The healthy, non-flu-infected mice
defeated the bacteria successfully and recovered.

To discover whether a lack of immune cells encourages an infection with
pneumonia bacteria in general, an artificial drug-induced lymphopenia was
established in the mice. Without infecting these lymphopenic mice with flu
viruses, they received pneumonia bacteria. Despite a severe lack of immune
cells, the mice recovered completely.

With these results, the researchers could show that influenza facilitates
and intensifies an infection from pneumonia bacteria, while disproving the
common idea that this is caused by a lack of immune cells. "This result
was an enormous surprise for us because it directly contradicts widespread
assumptions", says Sabine Stegemann, researcher in the groups "Immune
regulation" at the HZI and "Molecular Immunology" at the
Otto-von-Guericke-University in Magdeburg.

"Now we want to understand the reasons for the increased
susceptibility", says Matthias Gunzer, head of the group in Magdeburg.
"It could be interplay of weakened mucous membranes and scavenger cells
that induce ideal conditions for pneumonia bacteria to create a deadly lung infection.
Another reason may be a reaction of the host immune system: It disables
hyperactive flu-fighting immune cells to inhibit destruction of healthy lung
tissue. "The immune system keeps itself under control and that makes it
easy for pneumonia bacteria to infect the lung", says Gunzer.

Blood circulates through the body providing nutrients and oxygen to all the cells in the body and similarly removes the waste products. When you go in for a complete physical test, you will probably undergo a series of tests to evaluate the composition and concentration of all the cellular components of blood. This test is known as the Complete Blood Count (CBC) and consists of tests to evaluate Red Blood Cell (RBC) count, White Blood Cell (WBC) count, the platelet count, measurement of hemoglobin, mean red cell volume and a few more.

The Complete Blood Count helps evaluate the blood and the bone marrow and is usually performed to ensure oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, identify infections, diagnose anemia and leukemia and also gauge the effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on blood production cells.

White Blood Cells

The white blood cells are also known as leukocytes. In the absence of any disease, they form just about 1% by volume of the total blood in the body. When produced by the bone marrow the ‘immature’ white blood cells are released into the peripheral blood and are called bands or stabs. They are destroyed in the lymphatic system 13 to 20 days after they are produced by the bone marrow.

White blood cells help fight infection through a process known as ‘phagocytosis’ wherein they surround the foreign organisms and then destroy it. Along with fighting infection, white blood cells also help produce, transport and distribute antibodies to build the body’s immune system. In case of acute infection, the white blood cells produce a substance known as the colony-stimulating factor (CSF), which stimulates the bone marrow to increase the white blood cell production. The production of the cells can be doubled within a few hours.

White Blood Cell Count

The complete blood count provides a count of the white blood cell and also an automated differential count that determines the percentage of the five types of mature white blood cells present in the human body. The five types of white blood cells are neutrophils, lympocytes, basophils, eosinophils and monocytes. Neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils have a multi-lobed nucleus. These are differentiated based on the color of the cytoplasm, size and the color of the nucleus and lastly, the size and color of the granules present in the blood cells. The white blood cell count helps provide information about various illnesses and also help monitor the patient’s recovery once treatment is started. The differential blood count indicates as to which kind of blood cells are the most affected.

The normal white blood count is between 4500 and 10000 cells per micro-liter depending on the sex and age of the individual with each type of white blood cell representing:

  • Neutrophils: 50 – 70%
  • Lympocytes: 25 – 35%
  • Basophils: 0.4 – 1%
  • Eosinophils: 1 – 3%
  • Monocytes: 4 – 6%

A high blood count (above 30000 cells per micro-liter) indicates is not a specific disease by itself but indicates infection, systemic illness, inflammation, allergy, leukemia and tissue injury caused due to burns. The count of white blood cells also increases when certain medicines like antibiotics or anti-seizure drugs. Smoking and too much of mental stress also increases the count of the white blood cells in the body. Also, once the count of white blood cell is on the higher side, the risk of cardiovascular mortality also increases. It turns into a vicious circle. On the other end, a low count of white blood cells indicates viral infections, low immunity and bone marrow failure. A severely low white blood count that is the count of less than 2500 cells per micro-liter is a cause for a critical alert and possess a high risk of sepsis.

The white blood count is an easily available, inexpensive and a reliable test which enables the doctors to arrive at better prognosis regarding the patient’s well being. However, researchers believe that a cause and effect link between the higher white blood cell count and illness has not been established and they continue to evaluate if the elevated count helps trigger a serious disease or if the cells count rises naturally after an illness.

It is very important to undergo annual physical checkups and insist on a complete blood count analysis, especially as you grow older. Chemotherapy is administered to treat various types of cancers. Cancer is a life-threatening disease, caused by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Cancer cells or malignant cells can spread to other parts of body through the blood and lymphatic system. There are about 100 types of cancer, such as lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, liver cancer etc. Major categories of cancer are carcinoma, sarcoma, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma as well as cancers of the central nervous system. If cancer is diagnosed in its early stage, the chances of healing are more. The various treatment options for cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. How Does Chemotherapy Work? Chemotherapy is the most common treatment method for different types of cancers. Chemotherapy involves the use of chemicals to prevent the growth of cancer cells. The drugs used in chemotherapy are known as ‘anticancer drugs’ and they destroy the malignant cells. Chemotherapy drugs work by destroying rapidly dividing cancer cells. But, these drugs are not able to differentiate between malignant cells and normal body cells. Malignant cells as well as some other normal cells like those in the blood, intestinal tract, nails, hair, mouth and vagina are constantly dividing. Chemotherapy drugs travel throughout the body and destroy normal, healthy cells in the bone marrow, digestive tract, hair follicle, mouth and reproductive system. Some of the chemotherapy drugs affect the cells in the lungs, heart, bladder, kidneys as well as the nervous system. This can lead to many side effects. The severity of chemotherapy side effects depends upon the type of drugs administered and the patient’s health. The side effects can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) or permanent. Diarrhea and constipation: The cells in the intestinal lining, are among the rapidly growing normal cells that are destroyed during chemotherapy, causing diarrhea. Diarrhea during cancer treatment is also due to anxiety, stress, malnutrition or colon surgery. Diarrhea can cause stomach pain and cramping, bloating, nausea, loss of appetite and skin irritation. Some pain relievers and anticancer medications can cause constipation. These symptoms may also occur, if your diet doesn’t contain adequate amount of fibers or fluids. Allergic or hypersensitivity reaction: Chemotherapy drugs can lead to allergies or hypersensitivity reactions, triggered by the immune system response. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction, which can cause low blood pressure, shock and death. Major symptoms of allergic reactions are breathing difficulty, skin rashes, hives, flushing (redness of the face and neck), swelling of the eyelids, lips and tongue, and systemic reactions such as liver and kidney diseases. Skin problems: Chemotherapy can cause some skin problems such as skin rashes and dry skin. It can also cause flaky, cracked and itchy skin. Fatigue: Most cancer patients complain of tiredness, lack of energy and fatigue. It is due to pain, loss of appetite, lack of sleep as well as low blood counts. Fatigue due to chemotherapy appears suddenly and can last for several days, weeks or months. Mouth and throat sores: Anticancer drugs can cause irritation of the tissues of mouth and throat, resulting in bleeding. Mouth sores, also known as stomatitis or mucositis, cause swollen, red ulcers in the oral cavity. The patient is unable to talk, eat, chew or swallow due to painful ulcers. Chemotherapy can also lead to tender gums and sore throat. Nerve and muscle effects: In some cases, anticancer drugs affect the nerves, leading to peripheral neuropathy. It causes symptoms like weakness, burning, tingling, pain or numbness in the hands or feet. Some chemotherapy drugs cause weakness or soreness of muscles. Nerve and muscle-related problems can also lead to symptoms such as loss of balance, pain when walking, shaking or trembling, jaw pain, stomach pain and hearing loss. Suppressed bone marrow: Blood cells like white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets are produced in the bone marrow. Since chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells, it affects bone marrow cells. As a result, the production of blood cells in the bone marrow is suppressed, increasing the risk of infections. Anemia: Reduced ability of bone marrow to produce red blood cells, can cause a decrease in their number. Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to all body parts. Due to deficiency in red blood cells or anemia, body tissue is deprived of sufficient amount of oxygen. Anemia causes symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness and tiredness. Infection: Chemotherapy causes diminished production of white blood cells (leukopenia) in the bone marrow, leading to weakened immune system, which makes your body more vulnerable to infections. Infections are mainly due to bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Some common areas for infection are mouth, throat, lungs, sinuses, skin, intestine and genital tracts. Major signs and symptoms of infection are swelling, redness and pus at the site of injury, mucus or pus in the saliva, cough, nasal drainage, sore throat, high fever, chills and a burning sensation during micturition. Bleeding or clotting problems: Due to suppressed bone marrow functioning, the number of platelets decreases. Platelets play a major role in the process of blood clotting and thus, prevent bleeding. Reduced platelet count leads to symptoms like unexpected bruising, longer bleeding after minor cuts, nosebleeds or bleeding gums, vaginal bleeding other than menstruation, hematuria, black or bloody stool, headaches and changes in vision. Flu-like symptoms: Some people experience flu-like symptoms, a few hours after the chemotherapy cycle. These symptoms include headache, nausea, tiredness, chills, slight fever, loss of appetite and muscle and joint pain. Effect on sexual organs: Chemotherapy can affect sexual organs in both men and women. Chemotherapy drugs can lower the sperm count, which may result in temporary or permanent infertility in men. Anticancer drugs can affect the ovaries and hormonal levels. This can cause menopause-like symptoms (dry vagina and hot flashes), and temporary or permanent infertility in women. In spite of these side effects, chemotherapy is one of the most effective treatment options for various types of cancer. In most cases, chemotherapy side effects disappear, after the treatment is stopped. These side effects can be prevented by taking appropriate medications, maintaining proper hygiene, intake of dietary supplements and following a healthy lifestyle that includes the right balance of a nutritious and healthy diet and regular exercises.

Blood is a liquid connective tissue made from different types of blood cells and a liquid, called plasma. The major function of blood is to carry oxygen and essential nutrients to all parts of the body. There are three types of blood cells: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells and platelets. White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are the main cells of the immune system. They fight invading harmful organisms like bacteria and viruses and protect the body against infections. White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. They are colorless and asymmetrical in shape. They have a short lifespan, from few days to few weeks. White blood cell count is considered as an important criteria to diagnose various health conditions.

Types of White Blood Cells

There are two main categories of white blood cells such as granulocytes and agranulocytes, based on the presence of granules in the cytoplasm of the cells. There are three types of granulocytes, namely, neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils. Agranulocytes are categorized as monocytes and lymphocytes. Neutrophils, also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes, play a major role in the body’s defense system. They kill bacteria through the process of phagocytosis. These cells are present in the pus near the sites of injury or infection. Eosinophils mainly attack parasites. They are responsible for allergic reactions. Basophils secrete heparin and histamine and contribute to hypersensitivity reactions within the body.

Monocytes are the largest type of white blood cells. They function as tissue macrophages and phagocytize bacteria as well as prevent invasion of foreign bodies. These cells also remove dead, damaged cells from the body. Lymphocytes are directly associated with the immune system. These cells produce antibodies against the toxins secreted by microorganisms.

White Blood Cell Count

White blood cell count is a very important diagnostic factor to detect a number of health problems such as infections, bone marrow disorders and inflammatory diseases. It is also used to monitor the response of the body to various treatments. White blood cell count is a good criteria to evaluate bone marrow function. White blood cell count constitutes the total number of leukocytes and the differential leukocyte count. In differential count, the percentage of each type of leukocyte is measured.

The normal count of leukocytes is 4,000-11,000/mm3. The average count is 7,000/mm3. If the leukocyte count is below 4,000, then the condition is known as leukopenia. There may be decrease in the percentage of each type of leukocytes. For example, decrease in the number of neutrophils is known as neutropenia. If the count is higher than 11,000, then it is referred to as leukocytosis. There may be increase in each type of white blood cells like neutrophilia, eosinophilia, basophilia, monocytosis and lymphocytosis.

The percentage of each type of white blood cells can be obtained through the differential leukocyte count. The normal percentage of granulocytes and agranulocytes is as follows:

  • Neutrophils: 50-70% (2,500-7,000 absolute count)
  • Basophils: 0.4-1% (40-100 absolute count)

What causes Low White Blood Cell Count?

Low white blood cell count or leukopenia is caused by various medical conditions such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, aplastic anemia, autoimmune diseases like lupus, spleen disease, liver diseases and viral infections. A deficiency of vitamins and certain minerals like copper and zinc can also lead to leukopenia. Leukopenia can result from certain bone marrow diseases such as myelodysplastic syndrome. Medications like immunosuppressive drugs, certain antibiotics, antithyroid drugs, diuretics and chemotherapy drugs can also lead to leukopenia. Low blood cell count leads to a weakened immune system, making the body more susceptible to bacterial, viral or fungal infections.

What causes High White Blood Cell Count?

High white blood cell count or leukocytosis is caused by anemia, infections, allergies, systemic diseases, inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, tissue damage caused by burns, leukemia and physical or emotional stress. Certain medications like heparin, corticosteroids, quinine and anti-seizure drugs can also increase white blood cell count. A newborn has high white blood cell count that ranges from 9,000 to 30,000/mm3 on the day of birth. Within two weeks, the count falls to normal adult range. Leukocytosis is also common during pregnancy.

How is White Blood Cell Count Done?

When the doctor suspects infection or any disorder that can affect the leukocyte count, then a white blood cell count test is recommended. White blood cell count is generally ordered as a part of complete blood count (CBC). CBC, also called hemogram, involves determination of hemoglobin percentage, erythrocyte count, hematocrit, total leukocyte count, differential leukocyte count, platelet count and examination of blood smear to study cytology and presence of parasites. Blood sample is obtained from a venous or fingerprick blood collection. In infants, heel stick is the most preferred method for blood collection. White blood cell count can be done through a manual method or by using automated cell counters. Absolute count of each type of leukocytes e.g. the absolute neutrophil count, absolute lymphocyte count or absolute eosinophil count, is also determined.

Astragalus has been around in Chinese medicine for two thousand years. It is known as ‘haung qi‘, or chi, because it boosts natural body energy levels. Astragalus is taken from the root of a perennial plant (Astragalus membranaceous) needing four to seven years to mature before the root is harvested in early spring. The root is not unlike a garlic bulb. Astragalus seems to be able to do both jobs. Firstly, it has phenomenal immune system modulating effects. In tests at the Hiroshima School of Medicine in Japan, it was shown to directly increase B-lymphocyte and T-lymphocyte levels, interleukin and antibody production.
But, not only does it increase the number of various white cells and in particular the ‘hunter’ T-cells it also helps identify the viruses, bacteria and other rogue cells. The University of Texas has shown that Astragalus seems to be an adaptogenic herb ’offering up’ viruses, bacteria and even cancer cells to be seen by the immune system.

Astragalus contains bioflavonoids, choline and a polysaccharide, asragalan B, amongst other active ingredients. Astragalan B controls bacterial infection, viruses and other such ‘rogue’ bodies by binding to their outer membranes. This has two effects – it weakens their internal systems, and by sitting on the membrane it thus helps the T-cells identify rogue cells.

All this also makes its use as an adjunct to fight AIDS increasingly important.

FDA to approve role in cancer

A considerable amount of detailed German and American research has confirmed the herb’s powers, and identified an important potential role in cancer therapy. For example:

  • Researchers from the University of Texas, Houston, have reported that cancer patients receiving Astragalus have twice the survival rate of those only receiving placebos.
  • It is often used in conjunction with other herbs. In a 1994 Italian study (Morazzoni, Bombardelli) breast cancer patients were given a combination of Iigustrum and Astragalus. Patients given this mix showed a decline in mortality from 50% to 10%.
  • In another study of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer all undergoing chemotherapy, the group taking the dual herb mix showed an average life span increase of 130%.
  • Astragalus doesn’t merely enhance interferon levels; there is strong scientific evidence that it benefits liver function (often impaired in the cancer sufferer). In China, Astragalus is widely used in the treatment of hepatitis. It seems to reduce toxin levels significantly, boost interferon levels and inhibit viral protein expression whilst having little or no effect on normal DNA. (Zhang 1995, Fan 1996)

The FDA is currently granting it approval as an anti-cancer agent.

Improves the effectiveness of Radio- and Chemotherapy

One extremely important conclusion from several US studies is that Astragalus seems to help the immune system differentiate between healthy cells and rogue cells, thereby boosting the body’s total ‘cancer fighting system’. One effect of this is the added benefit of improving the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments.

  • In Chinese hospitals Astragalus is now routinely used to help people recover from the negative effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
  • MD Anderson Cancer Center (Texas) researchers reported that cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy had twice the survival rates if they took astragalus during the treatment.
  • In the West some herbalists routinely provide chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients with Astragalus, and apart from boosting the immune system (which of course both orthodox treatments damage) it also seems to stop the spread of malignant cancer cells to secondary healthy tissues.

There are no known conflicting effects with drugs. Astragalus should be taken with meals at a total intake of 2,000 to 3,000 mgs per day.

Scientists Enhance Immune System Attacks On Cancer

ScienceDaily-  Scientists have used multiple tactics to rev up both innate and adaptive immunity to enhance the body’s ability to fight cancer.

“The problem with cancer is that it becomes part of what the immune system identifies as ’self’ and there are ways the body learns to tolerate ’self’ to prevent immune attack,” says the study’s senior investigator, Linda Sherman, Ph.D., a professor in the Scripps Research Department of Immunology. “Hitting it with these new tools basically gets the immune system to pay attention to the cancer, and go after it.

She continues, “What is needed is effective and non-toxic immunotherapy for cancer patients, and we believe this work provides a foundation for that. The concepts we have shown are directly translatable to human therapy.”

Stimulating Killer T Cells

In the new study, the researchers basically used two different strategies. First, they worked out a way to force T cells—the immune system’s killer cells—to become active and grow in the presence of tumor “antigens,” the proteins on the outside of cancer cells that can stimulate an immune response. While these T cells recognize the tumor antigens, their response to them tends to be chronically weak because they are ’self’.

“We have been working for years to find ways to coax these so-called low affinity T cells to work better,” Sherman says.

In this study, the investigators tested a novel complex developed by Professor Jonathan Sprent, M.D., Ph.D., a previous member of the Scripps Research faculty who is now at the Garvan Institute in Sydney, Australia, and Scripps Research co-author, Professor Charles Surh, Ph.D. The agent combines Interleukin-2 (IL-2) with an IL-2 antibody. IL-2 is a well-known stimulator of the growth of activated T cells, and is often used to boost immune system response in human therapy; T cells have IL-2 receptors on their surface. In previous studies, Sprent and Surh found that coupling IL-2 with a specific type of IL-2 antibody allows the complex to bind better to activated T cells and produces a more robust T cell response.

“The beauty of this complex is that, as we demonstrate in this paper, it has a much greater ability to bind to low affinity T cells, which IL-2 itself cannot do very well,” says Sherman.

So, in order to jump start such an immune reaction, the researchers prime T cells by delivering this complex. When this complex binds to T cells, they grow and mature and deliver a signal to release cytotoxic granules that enter tumor cells and promote apoptosis, or cell death.

“A number of nice things begin to happen,” says Sherman. “T cell growth is promoted as well as their killing function. There is a lot of good activity.”

However, as soon as investigators withdraw the IL-2 complex, the T cells die quickly, as their growth stimulant has been removed.

The “Double Whammy”

The researchers’ second strategy, then, was to also deliver an agent known as poly(l:C) that keeps T cells surviving longer. The agent also enhances the killing power of the T cells by stimulating the innate immune system, which provides an immediate defense against invaders.

“It is this trick of really stimulating T cell proliferation and killing functions, and then keeping the T cells alive, that provides the double whammy,” Sherman says. “The T cells are hitting all their bases, and that is when we see the killing of tumors.”

The researchers tested the system in mice that spontaneously develop tumors. The researchers delivered tumor antigen, the IL2 complex, and poly(l:C) all at the same time, and demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the strategy.

Today, there are human cancer treatments that work in the same way, but they are highly toxic, Sherman says. For example, some patients with melanoma receive melanoma antigens, infusions of T cells, and high doses of IL2, which causes a lot of harmful side effects. Since the IL-2 complex can be used at ~50-fold lower doses than IL-2 with the same efficacy, the use of complex is likely to circumvent the toxicity problem. To further rev up the immune response, patients sometimes also receive whole body irradiation, which produces widespread inflammation.

“We think we can provide two very safe ways to hit these same bases,” Sherman says.

However, more research needs to be done before human studies can begin, including finding an antibody to human IL-2 that works in the same way.

This research is published in an Early Edition issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published online on October 20, 2008.

In addition to Sherman and Surh, study co-authors were Gregory Verdeil, Ph.D., and Kristi Marquardt of The Scripps Research Institute.

The ability of the immune system to fight disease is dependent upon the level of general health and physical fitness. However, even a. healthy body will have its immunocompetence severely reduced by excessive stress or fatigue. The reason for this is that, amongst other things, stress increases the viscosity of the blood.

The blood is an all-important factor in the promotion of effective immune responses. A high blood viscosity brought about by stress, or lack of physical fitness, results in a breakdown of efficiency in the components of the immune system. When a person is physically unfit, overweight or stressed, the blood becomes clogged with cholesterol, triglycerides (fats), and various waste products. The fat causes the red cells to stick together with tiny particles called platelets, whose function is to clot the blood in the event of injury. As a result, the blood becomes sludgy and sticky and its oxygen carrying capacity is reduced. This factor, plus the narrowing of arteries by cholesterol deposits, means that it can no longer flow freely.

When these circumstances occur, the white cells and antibodies cannot function properly, resulting in impairment of the immune system. It is vital therefore, in the treatment of chronic allergy conditions, to achieve and maintain low blood viscosity. This can be done by shedding excess weight, regular exercise and the reduction of dietary cholesterol and fats.

The newborn baby does not have a fully functioning immune system or digestive system. These develop during the first twelve months of life. During this critical period, the child is dependent on the mother’’s milk to provide immunoglobulins for protection and enzymes for digestion. Breast milk contains substances which give the infant immunity, as well as nutrients and enzymes in the exact proportion necessary for the baby’’s needs. For this reason, a baby should be breast-fed for at least the first six months of life. If the child is introduced to foreign substances, such as cow’’s milk and cereals too early, permanent damage to the developing immune system and lifelong allergy problems can result.

During the first few months of life a child does not produce enough enzymes to break down introduced foods sufficiently. A baby’’s gut is very porous and relies on a secretion from the mother’’s breast, called colostrum, which acts as a coating, thus preventing harmful protein molecules passing through the gut wall into the blood.

If the child is denied this protection, undigested food particles will enter the bloodstream and confuse the developing immune system, which then accepts them as normal. This causes immunological havoc and instead of being digested by enzymes and white cells, the substances may be ignored by the immune system and left to cause allergy reactions. The problem may continue into adult life, causing further damage to the body and increasing illness.

Immunotherapy is one method of attempting to help or stimulate the immune system to overcome a disease condition. With respect to complex allergy problems, especially those concerning food and chemicals, this approach is rarely successful. Apart from the difficulty in obtaining accurate diagnosis, the process seeks to stimulate something which is often too overloaded to respond.

The most effective method of helping the immune system is by diet and exercise. Abstinence from allergenic foods, together with additional nutrients and a common sense approach to regular exercise, will cleanse the blood, reduce stored toxins and encourage the immune system to rebuild its efficiency.
